Happy Jesus

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” – John 15:11

Since I began painting portraits of Jesus in May 2025, one question has come up again and again: Why is Jesus so often depicted as somber or sorrowful? People share how they’ve rarely—if ever—seen images of a truly happy, smiling Jesus, and how they long for artwork that captures His deep, radiant joy.

This painting was born from that longing. Titled John 15:11, it celebrates the overflowing joy Jesus promises to share with us—the same joy He carries within Himself. Here, His warm smile beams with genuine delight, His eyes sparkle with life and love, and the glowing background echoes the light of His presence. Every brushstroke aims to reflect the contagious, complete joy Scripture describes: not fleeting happiness, but the profound, abiding joy that comes from abiding in Him.
